Fairytale history of an Anglesey Castle
Our History
Unique Fairytale Hotel
Our story is a special one going back many years to the exquisite scenery of the Loire Valley in France. Today it is told through the magnificent architecture of our Grade ll-listed Château in North Wales, nestled away on the picturesque Isle of Anglesey on the bank of the Menai Strait with breathtaking views overlooking Snowdonia.

From the Beginning
Our real-life fairy-tale is one we enjoy telling, but even better, it’s one we like to show you as we take you on an exciting journey back in time. Built in 1849 by Sir John Hay-Williams, Baronet of Bodelwyddan, as a gift for his wife Lady Sarah. The Château was originally built as a dower house, beautifully positioned on the water. However, inspiration and artistic imagination influenced the design from the couple’s travels in the Loire region of France, where they were particularly enamoured with the architectural style favoured in the region during the reign of Francois I (1515-1547).

As time went on
Our beautiful Château tells an exciting history both inside and out, following Lady Sarah’s dream that everything would be perfect and no detail overlooked. The magnificent interiors were chosen by her own hand, and to honour her exquisite taste and connect the French-style Château to its newly formed Welsh roots, the house was christened “Rhianfa” (put forward by the local vicar), which means ladies abode.

Our story continues
Our story so far is precious to us and one that we want to tell for years to come to all who discover the hidden jewel of Château Rhianfa. Over the recent years we've taken great care to preserve our treasured French-style architecture through gentle restoration to ensure the historic charm and unique character of Château Rhianfa will last forever like any true fairy-tale should. Over time our charming character, inspired by an enchanting love story, lives on for you to admire today as you make it part of your own during your stay at Château Rhianfa.
